The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a tiger subspecies native to the Indian subcontinent that in 2010 has been classified as endangered by IUCN. The total population is estimated at fewer than 2,500 individuals with a decreasing trend, and none of the Tiger Conservation Landscapes within the Bengal tiger’s range is large enough to support an effective population size of 250 adult individuals.
The Bengal tiger is the most numerous tiger subspecies with populations estimated at 1,411 in India, 200 in Bangladesh, 155 in Nepal and 67–81 inBhutan.
Bengal is traditionally fixed as the typical locality for the binomial Panthera tigris, to which the British taxonomist Reginald Innes Pocock subordinated the Bengal tiger in 1929 under the trinomial Panthera tigris tigris.

  1. While I understand the tiger is probably safer, unfortunately, it’s more like wild beauty behind bars. Nice capture though…

  2. I’ve gotta go with caged… great shot though – captures the tiger’s tension and I think pacing motion… one of those 1000 word photos. Well done!

  3. Personally, I’d prefer if they were wild. There’s something that I find unsettling about animals in captivity. Mind you, if you were suggesting having a breeding population wandering round the Lake District while I was trying to do a bit of hill walking I guess I might answer differently!
Great shot, captures the power of the tiger and the captivity beautifully.

  4. Great shot of a caged wild ferocity!
Good set of info too. It’s sad to know this subspecies is listed among the endangered! Even sad to realize that even its native is shrinking which means unable to balance the envmt. leading to slow death of a race!

  5. I really like this shot – the slight movement of the fence, and the proximity of the tiger to the fence really give that caged feeling.

  6. Excellent. Tiger looks so majestic.

  7. Power in wild. Great shot. πŸ™‚
